Workshop Report on Lung Health Matters: Empowering Nurses for Better Respiratory Care

Introduction:

A one-day workshop titled “Lung Health Matters: Empowering Nurses for Better Respiratory Care” was conducted by the College of Nursing, Nursing Department & Department of Respiratory Medicine, St. Stephen’s Hospital, in collaboration with the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), Delhi Branch. The workshop was addressed by National Office bearers of TNAI HQ and Executive members of TNAI Delhi Branch.

Aim:

  • The workshop aimed to enhance the knowledge about lung health and skills of nursing professionals in managing respiratory conditions—an area of crucial importance, especially in today’s healthcare landscape.

Objectives of the Workshop

  • To understand the anatomy and physiology of the lungs
  • To identify significant risk factors affecting lung health
  • To promote early detection and prevention of respiratory diseases
  • To discuss modern diagnostic and treatment modalities
  • To encourage public health action and advocacy for cleaner air

Inauguration and Opening Session

The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Ms. Elizabeth Santosh (Nursing Superintendent, SSH), followed by an inaugural speech by Dr Sudhir C Joseph (Director, SSH), who emphasised the urgent need to address air quality as a significant threat to lung health. The keynote address was delivered by Dr Shamim Akhtar (HOD, Respiratory Medicine), a pulmonologist, who highlighted the rising incidence of COPD, asthma, and lung cancer in both urban and rural populations. The TNAI National President and Guest of Honour, Mrs Annie Kumar, delivered a special address on an overview of TNAI to the gathering.

Technical Sessions

The workshop was divided into the following sessions:

  1. Asthma Management and Guidelines:
    Dr.Shubham, Respiratory Physician, provided an overview of lung anatomy and common diseases like Asthma.
  2. Oxygen Delivery, Devices and Medications:
    A session on the oxygen therapy, devices used commonly, and treatment protocols, including medications, was conducted by Dr Madhu, Respiratory Physician.
  3. Non-Invasive Ventilation and Mechanical Ventilation:
    This session focused on artificial ventilation and its management of long-term respiratory conditions. Dr Shamim Akthar, HOD of Respiratory Medicine, conducted this session.
  4. Nursing Role in Respiratory Disorders:

This session focused on the roles and responsibilities of nurses while handling patients with respiratory disorders.

  1. Practical Session:
    Participants were taught about the care of the intercostal tubes, proper use of inhaler devices, introduced to the use of spirometry, inhaler techniques, ventilator mode settings and preparation of patients for the diagnostic procedures of the respiratory disorders like bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and bronchial artery embolisation (BAE).

Valedictory Session:

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from the organisers and a post-test and certificate distribution. Feedback was collected from participants, with most reporting that the sessions were explained in detail, with relevant practical sessions
