Topic: “STRENGTHENING PRIMARY CARE IN PREVENTION OF CERVICAL CANCER”

Introduction:
The One-day Capacity building program was Organized by the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI) Delhi Branch in Collaboration with the Preventive Oncology Department, Dr BRA IRCH, AIIMS, New Delhi.

Overview
The program aimed to enhance the participants’ understanding of Primary Care for Cervical Cancer Prevention and improve their ability in clinical practice. The sessions were carefully designed to cover fundamental concepts, advanced techniques, and practical applications.
Highlights of Capacity Building Program:
The program started at 8:30 AM with the registration of participants. Renowned experts from the Preventive Oncology Dept of AIIMS IRCH facilitated the sessions, ensuring participants gained in-depth knowledge of Primary Care for Cervical Cancer Prevention.

Sessions of Capacity Building Workshop
- The First Sessionwas on Cervical Cancer: A preventive threat and need for action was taken by Dr Sujata Pathak, Scientist II, IRCH AIIMS, Preventive Oncology Department.
- Prevention through Awareness & Vaccination Session was conducted by Mr Mathew Verghese, Nursing Officer, IRCH AIIMS.

Inaugural Session:
An Inaugural session was graced by Prof. Sanjay Tulkar, Additional Medical Superintendent, IRCH AIIMS, Prof. Sushma Bhatnagar, Chief of Dr B.R.A IRCH AIIMS, Dr Pallavi Shukla, Associate Professor, Preventive Oncology Dept, AIIMS, Dr Seema Singhal, Associate Professor, Dept of OBG, AIIMS, CNO Mrs Suman R Kashyap Madam and DNS Mrs Mithlesh Singh, Dr B.R.A. IRCH AIIMS and TNAI Delhi Branch President Mrs Yangchen Dolma with other EC members, including Dr V Indumathy, Secretary, The TNAI Delhi Branch, Mr Mansingh Jat, Chairperson of Nursing Service, Dr Sharvan Kumar Dhaka, Chairperson of the Public Health Nursing Committee and Ms Geeta Rani, Representative of ANM & LHV Committee, TNAI Delhi Branch. The inaugural address by Prof Sushma Bhatnagar and Prof Sanjay Tulkar, Addl MS emphasised the critical role of Public Health Personnel in preventing Cervical Cancer by strengthening primary care.

Scientific Sessions continued after Inauguration:
- Screening as a Secondary Prevention Tool for Cervical Cancer was taken by Dr Sharda Patra, Director Professor, LHMC
- Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) was taken byDr Anju Singh, Associate Professor, Department of OBG, AIIMS
- Skit Performance on Primary Prevention of Cervical Cancer was explained in the form of Nukkad Natak and Group Skit by Nursing Officers of IRCH AIIMS
- Management algorithm after VIA was explained by Dr Seema Singhal, Additional Professor from Dept of OBG, AIIMS
- Overcoming barriers in Cervical Cancer was taken by Dr Jitendra Kumar Meena, Associate Professor, Preventive Oncology, NCI, AIIMS, Jhajjar
- Population-based Cervical Cancer Screening was taken byDr Pallavi Shukla, Associate Professor, Preventive Oncology, AIIMS
Highlights of Skill Development Sessions:
- The Vaccination Demonstration was explained by Mr Mathew Verghese, Nursing Officer IRCH, AIIMS
- Preparing acetic acid and Lugol’s Solution was demonstrated by Ms Namrata Vashist, Nursing Officer, IRCH, AIIMS
- Sampling for HPV & PAP test was demonstrated by Ms Denny Mariam Benny, Nursing Officer, IRCH, AIIMS
- VIA Interpretation was explained by the Gynae Project Staff of AIIMS.
Participant Details
All the participants were nominated by the State and Delhi Government Public Health Nursing Department. Out of 60 nominated participants, 57 of them attended the one-day capacity-building program.
Performance Evaluation
A pre-test and post-test were conducted to measure the knowledge improvement among participants.
- Average Pre-Test Score: 7/15
- Average Post-Test Score: 14 /15
The marked improvement in scores highlights the effectiveness of the Workshop in enhancing participants’ Primary Care for Cervical Cancer Prevention in the Community.
Participant Feedback
Participants expressed high satisfaction towards the capacity-building program. The skill stations were appreciated as a practical tool and SKIT by Nursing officers for applying theoretical knowledge. Many attendees acknowledged the relevance of the topics covered to their professional practice.
