Report on Two-Day Workshop: “CAN Care – A Holistic Approach in Nursing Care”

Organised by: TNAI Delhi State Branch in collaboration with RAK College of Nursing
The TNAI Delhi State Branch, in collaboration with RAK College of Nursing, successfully organised a two-day workshop titled “CAN Care – A Holistic Approach in Nursing Care” from the 16th to the 17th of January 2025. The workshop aimed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and holistic approach of nursing professionals in cancer care. The event featured 44 participants from nursing institutions and hospitals, including nursing officers, educators, and student professionals.
Day 1: 16th January 2025 began with registration at 9:00 AM and the inaugural session at 10 AM. The Workshop started with a Prayer song presented by the Nursing students of RAK College, followed by the lamp lighting.
An Inaugural session was graced by Dr Achala Kumar, Additional Director General (Nursing), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, as the Chief Guest. Mrs Evelyn P. Kannan, Madam, National Secretary-General TNAI, as the Guest of Honor, Dr Indumathy, TNAI Delhi State Branch Secretary, Dr Daisy Thomas is the organizing secretary and chairperson of the Education and Research Committee, TNAI Delhi Branch. Ms Savita Devi, Coordinator and Joint Secretary of TNAI Delhi Branch. Ms. Santosh Singh, Co-coordinator & Chairperson of the Socio-Economic & Welfare Committee, TNAI Delhi Branch Other esteemed EC members, including Dr Sharvan Kumar Dhaka, Chairperson of the Public Health Nursing Committee and Ms Geeta Rani, Representative of ANM & LHV Committee, TNAI Delhi Branch. Dr Daisy Thomas welcomed the guests and presented saplings to the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor as a gesture of appreciation.
In the inaugural address, Dr. Achala emphasised the critical role of nurses in providing compassionate and evidence-based care to cancer patients. Madam Evelyn P. Kannan addressed the audience, introducing the TNAI (Trained Nurses Association of India) and highlighting the importance of continuous education in nursing. Dr. V. Indumathy, Secretary of the TNAI Delhi Branch, delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all those involved in the workshop’s organisation.
The Scientific sessions commenced by covering the Overview of Cancer & Types:
- Overview of Cancer Types, Stages, Causes & Diagnostic Methods taken by
Mrs Usha Phulara, Tutor, RAK College of Nursing – Provided foundational knowledge on cancer progression and diagnosis. - Cervical and Ovarian Cancer: Prevention and Control
Dealt by Col. Mrs Madhumita Dhall, Director of Nursing, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre – Discussed preventive measures and management of emergencies in cancer care. - Treatment Modalities of Cancer & Handling Oncological Emergencies, Ms. Surya Sukumaran, a Nurse Educator at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre, conducted this session.
- Lung Cancer: Risk and Management was taken by Dr Uma Shankar, Nursing Officer, AIIMS, and the session focused on early detection and effective management strategies for lung cancer.
Day 2: 17th January 2025, the focus shifted to specific cancer types and supportive care.
5. Prostate Cancer: Early Diagnosis was taken by Dr. Lekha Viswanath, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, and the session dealt with emphasised screening and early diagnosis.
6. Colorectal Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment were taken by Mrs Jeena Jose, Nursing Superintendent, Holy Family Hospital, who shared insights on diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
7. Psychosocial Challenges in Cancer Care was taken by Mrs Vaishali, Nursing Officer & Adolescent Counsellor, Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital, who addressed emotional and psychological challenges in cancer care.
8. Breast Cancer: Detection and Treatment dealt with by Ms Shashi Sarma, SNO, NDDTC, AIIMS, who highlighted self-examination techniques and treatment modalities.
9. Alternative & Complementary Therapies in Cancer Care: This session was taken by Ms Megha Gupta, ANS, All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi, who highlighted the updates of alternative treatment modalities in Cancer Therapy and conducted a short practical session of Yoga Nidra.
10. Mrs. Neelam R Lal, Retd DNS, IRCH, AIIMS took Palliative Care & End-of-Life Care. This session was focused on compassionate and dignified end-of-life care.
Result Analysis of Workshop:

The pre-test results revealed an average score of 68%, whereas the post-test results demonstrated a notable improvement, with an average score of 92%. This improvement highlights the workshop’s effectiveness and success in enhancing the participants’ knowledge and skills.
Valedictory Session:
The workshop concluded with a post-test to evaluate the participants’ learning outcomes, followed by the valedictory session. Mrs Annie Madam, National President of TNAI, graced the session as the chief guest. Ms. Savita Devi warmly welcomed her, and as a token of appreciation, a sapling was presented to Ms. Anni Madam, symbolising growth and sustainability. In her address, Mrs Annie Madam commended the participants for their dedication and active involvement throughout the workshop. Certificates were distributed to all attendees to recognise their participation. In the end, Dr Sharvan Kumar Dhaka and Ms Geeta Gulati delivered an engaging presentation on the benefits of TNAI membership, inspiring attendees to join and actively contribute to the association.

The collaboration between RAK College of Nursing and the TNAI Delhi State Branch ensured the smooth execution of the event.

The two-day workshop successfully enhanced the understanding and skills of nursing professionals in cancer care, emphasising a holistic approach. This workshop highlighted the importance of continued education and collaboration in improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
